Children's Consortium

Vision
Eswatini where rights of all children, including the most marginalised and vulnerable, are protected, respected and fulfilled.
 
Mission
A network of child-focused NGOs that undertake collective actions at the national, regional and international level for promotion and protection of children’s rights in Eswatini. 

Children form 48% of the national population with about 490 000 being people below the age of 18, (UNICEF 2013).
The Children Consortium was established in 2008 by CANGO with UNICEF's support currently has 29 active member NGOs. The Consortium serves as a coordinated forum of civil society in engaging policy issues with the Government and development partners through advocacy activities for the alleviation of issues of children while improving the conditions under which they live in order to grow up to being productive citizens.

Strategic Objectives  
  • Strategic Objective 1: To strengthen the institutional capacity of the Consortium to effectively fulfill and deliver its mandate
  • Strategic Objective 2: To collectively monitor, advocate and campaign for the development and implementation of legislative and policy frameworks aiming at improving the enjoyment of the rights of all children in Swaziland, inspired by the Swaziland obligations under the ICRC andACWRC.
  • Strategic Objective 3: To collectively advocate for improved social, economic and policy environment for protection and fulfilment of children’s rights, including to advocate for a pro-child rights investments in children and child-rights  national budget.
  • Strategic objective 4: To promote and create channels for child participation in issues affecting them.

Policy and legal framework
Children have rights too. These are enshrined in numerous national legal and policy framework, including ratification of regional and international instruments such as the United Nations Convention on the Child (1995), Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

Organisational Structure
The Consortium is led by elected Chair and Vice Chairperson and coordinated by CANGO (the Secretariat). The decision-making body of the Consortium is Steering Committee, which is composed of maximum seven active member organisations.
